A frustrated mother has found an unlikely but potentially lucrative publisher for her short story. Or an eBay power seller has discovered that she can clear out even the dregs of her son's closet and make big bucks. Either way, iIn this auction, dawnm5723, has managed to drum up hundreds of dollars for her son's unremarkable, somewhat scuffed baseball by attaching 1237 words of entertaining drama to the ball's photograph.
Dawn's story will not win this year's Pushcart prize, but it is circulating widely on the web today. Her Rube-Goldberg narrative recounts a rough day of parenting that begins with the baseball waking her to the sound of breaking glass. She explains, "Do you want to know why I'm selling the baseball that started off my wonderful first day of spring break? Only because Ebay won't let me sell my kids.."
With one day remaining, the story (with baseball) had reached a bid price of $345. EBay auctions generally skyrocket in the last hour, but even if this one budges no further, Dawn has already earned $.27 a word for her first draft. Not bad for a beginner.
